About Union Hall Gallery

Union Hall Gallery is located in Golden Hill at the historic San Diego Carpenter’s Union Hall building. Built by Local 1296, International Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners in 1948, the building has been home to several trade unions, an artist collective, the San Diego Reader, and a music venue. Recently rehabilitated by the owners of Santa Ysabel Art Gallery, Union Hall Gallery aims to support and showcase local and bi-national artists.

The gallery boasts 2,555 SF of exhibition space, a high arched ceiling, and steel windows overlooking downtown San Diego. In December 2023, the gallery hosted its first event, a special pop-up show named, “The Ruff & The Tuff”, for long-time tenant, Flying Panther Tattoo and their community of tattoo artists. Founded in 1992, Santa Ysabel Art Gallery exhibits both traditional and contemporary fine art and fine craft from established and emerging artists. The gallery has a long-standing commitment to excellence in painting, sculpture, ceramics, glass, and work in mixed media, and to the choice of artists who exhibit there. There is a special interest in regional California landscape painting and painters, both plein air and studio. An earmark of the gallery is the James Hubbell Room, which features the work of Santa Ysabel’s internationally recognized artist, poet, visionary, and builder of organic houses, James Hubbell.
